There will be no travel day 3 because I made it to my destination a bit early.
Since I woke up bright and early (actually it was still dark), I hit the road at 6:30 a.m. Not having anything else to do, and a time change, I just drove all the way to the town I’m staying in. My AirBnB doesn’t start until tomorrow so I’m staying at a hotel. I picked this one because it’s next to the highway to the ski area. I can sleep in and hit the slopes for a full day of skiing tomorrow.
The drive was entirely uneventful. I didn’t think Nebraska was ever going to end. It did, but it was sort of more of the same in Wyoming. At least the speed limit in Wyoming is 80 and there are mountain-ish terrain as you go west. I basically set the cruise and drove straight and more straight and more straight.
When I crossed into Utah the scenery changed almost immediately. It was like a Utah brochure. Gorgeous.
Music:
Started out finishing up the Clash discography.
1. Combat Rock
2. Cut the Crap
3. Live at Shea Stadium (one of my favorite albums…I’d have loved to see them live)
4. Live: From Here to Eternity
After that I couldn’t decide exactly what to listen to, but it dawned on me I should listen to an artist from a state I was driving through.
Nebraska – Bright Eyes (I just listened to the Apple Music Essentials). Omaha.
Wyoming – Teenage Bottlerocket (my kind of music!) are from Laramie. I listened to their first three albums.
Utah – Imagine Dragons – originally met at BYU.
In between I listened to the entire season of Business Wars podcast about Pizza Hut v Dominos.
Random:
– I drove by Cabela’s world HQ in Sidney NE
– State borders make no sense. I get something like Illinois’ western border being the Mississippi, but going from Nebraska to Wyoming is just a line. No terrain feature. At least Wyoming to Utah started some mountains. Illinois to Wisconsin? Ohio to Indiana? Just lines someone drew.
– About 15 miles out of Cheyenne I saw the first mountains. Mountains do it for me every time. I won’t get all philosophical but they speak to me of the indifference of the world to me. Those mountains have developed and been there for nine millions years. I’m a blip.
– I crossed the Continental Divide. I’ll have to Google it. I know I got it wrong on a sixth grade test and still didn’t bother to learn what it is. UPDATE – looked it up, yeah, I didn’t see anything but a sign.
– A few times on the trip I was a bit light headed. Didn’t realize Wyoming is elevated. I just read that Wyoming’s lowest point is still higher than the highest elevation in 17 states. Who knew?
I’m enjoying this series. 👍
