My daughter and I were running errands this afternoon and I decided, when I left her in the car to pop into a store, that we needed to have “the talk.” It’s become a big problem around here with teens this winter. She needed to know how to be safe.
So I told her, if you get carjacked, give up the car and keys. It’s not worth getting shot or hurt over a car. It’s insured and we can replace it. We can’t replace her. I reminded her to keep a distance between cars at a light so you can pull around if someone approaches the car, don’t stop if you get bumped from behind (drive to a police station and exchange information there), and to keep the doors locked.
As you can imagine, my daughter was THRILLED that when I said we needed to have “the talk” it wasn’t about sex. Although I did sneak it, “yeah, just don’t.” I’ll let her mother handle the rest.
