Welcome

#1 Grand Illusion

I’ve started watching the Criterion Collection in spine order.  Why?  Why not?  I like old movies and this seems to be a mindful way to do it.  I watch the movie, watch the accompanying videos about it, and generally will get to see some of the best movies ever made and learn why they are the best movies ever made.

Today I started with spine #1, Grand Illusion.  It is a 1937 French prisoner-of-war movie directed by Jean Renoir.  Good movie.

Here is what Criterion blurbed:

One of the very first prison escape movies, Grand Illusion is hailed as one of the greatest films ever made. Jean Renoir’s antiwar masterpiece stars Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay as French soldiers held in a World War I German prison camp, and Erich von Stroheim as the unforgettable Captain von Rauffenstein.

Only 1192 to go!*

*It will be less because I don’t plan on re-watching movies on the list I’ve already seen
